Visiting the Siquijor Butterfly Sanctuary

🦋 General Information
🗺️ Location: Cang-apa, Siquijor
🕰️ Opening Hours: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM
🎟️ Entrance Fee: Php 100 for Adults | Php 50 for Kids
Located in the locale of Cang-apa, Siquijor, which lies just east of Mt. Bandilaan, the Siquijor Butterfly Garden (also known as Siquijor Butterfly Sanctuary) is a haven for these beautiful and delicate winged creatures.
The sanctuary that started year 2008 thrives under the caring stewardship of Dante Jumapit, a friendly and knowledgeable garden owner.
During our visit, we had the privilege of conversing with Dante, and his unwavering passion for this project left me in awe!

According to him, they have a breeding farm where they keep 60% of the butterflies in the garden and release the other 40% into the environment.
They currently have 12 butterfly species but before CoVid, there were more than 20 of them. I really do hope that more kinds of butterflies will be available in this sanctuary in the future.
Despite the inevitable challenges especially during the pandemic, Dante remains dedicated to the cause.
The garden itself is a tapestry of vibrant colors, courtesy of the diverse and exquisite butterflies and other species that call it home.

The design is nothing short of enchanting: meticulously manicured plants create an inviting atmosphere.
Enclosed within a netted area, the butterflies flit about freely, their delicate wings catching the sunlight while cool air blows from the surroundings.
Being located near the highest peak of Siquijor Island, this garden benefits from the clean air and refreshing temperatures, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Despite its compact size, the Siquijor Butterfly Garden stands tall among the island’s must-visit tourist spots, drawing both local enthusiasts and curious travelers from afar.

How to Get Around in Siquijor?
🛵 Motorbike Rental

After getting to Siquijor, the most popular way to explore Siquijor Island is by renting a motorbike.
For around PHP 300-500 per day, you can have your scooter and explore the island at your own pace.
Despite its small size, a motorbike allows you to visit mesmerizing falls, clear beaches, and the highest point of the province.
My preferred choice whenever I’m in Siquijor is renting a motorcycle and having a local friend who owns a motor rental business makes it even better – she even guides us to off-the-beaten tourist destinations like the Siquijor Butterfly Sanctuary.
🛺 Tricycle
Another common mode of transportation on Siquijor is tricycles. They might be a bit slower than motorbikes, but they are also budget-friendly and you’ll have a personal driver. You can hire a tricycle for about PHP 1,000 per day.
🚙 Guided Tours
Consider booking a Siquijor package tour if you want a hassle-free experience. Various tour operators on Siquijor offer guided visits to common attractions such as the Old Enchanted Balete Tree, Cambugahay Falls, Salagdoong Beach, and the Lazi Church and Convent. Other hotels also cater a mountain tour which includes a visit to the Siquijor Butterfly Sanctuary.
🚙 Jeepney
Jeepneys are also available on Siquijor Island. They’re a tad slower than motorbikes but can also accommodate larger groups of people, and they come with a more affordable price tag – about PHP 1,500 per day.
More Tourist Spots in Siquijor Island
While you’re on this magical island, don’t miss these other Siquijor tourist spots:
📍 Cambugahay Falls

Swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of Cambugahay Falls and swing from ropes like Tarzan or take pictures with friends on one of the huge planks floating.
This Siquijor waterfall is a popular tourist destination and a must-visit for locals and foreigners alike.
📍 Salagdoong Beach

If you can’t get enough of the thrill, try cliff jumping on Salagdoong Beach and dive into the azure sea or sunbathe on the white sand afterward. Make sure to properly jump so you won’t hurt your back (like what happened to me).
📍 Paliton Beach

Known for its stunning sunsets, Paliton Beach is one of the Siquijor beaches that you don’t want to miss. Trust me, we drove about 24 kilometers from our place just to catch the sunset here and it was all worth it.
📍 Old Enchanted Balete Tree

Visit this ancient Balete tree with its natural fish spa and dip your feet in the cool water while letting the tiny fish give you a soothing massage. Just a heads-up, it’s a tad ticklish.
📍 Lazi Church and Convent

Explore the Baroque-style Lazi Church and its adjacent convent. The intricate woodwork and historical significance make it a fascinating stop before or after you visit other tourist spots in Lazi.
