Mindanao’s Affordable Hidden Gems
1. Siargao
Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines, but its charm goes way beyond Cloud 9. The island is lined with tall coconut trees, clear beaches and raw nature that give it a unique island vibe.
Locals are incredibly friendly and hospitable, and the seafood and local food are delicious and budget-friendly. You’ll also find affordable hotels and homestays, so staying longer doesn’t have to cost much.
Many visitors talk about the “Siargao curse”, saying once you arrive, you won’t want to leave. Getting around is simple because you can rent a motorcycle and explore the island at your own pace.
If you’re looking for a cheap and comfy place to stay, Hang Loose Hostel is a solid pick especially for solo travelers and couples.
It’s a quick walk to the beach, close to the tourist road, and surrounded by restaurants and small shops.
Many guests love how clean and well-maintained the facilities are, especially with the daily bathroom cleaning.

2. Samal Island
Samal Island gives you that luxe-island vibe without the high cost, and it’s super easy to reach with a short ferry ride from Davao City.
If you’re keeping things budget-friendly, you can enjoy public beaches, affordable day tours, and island-hopping trips.
For something affordable and family-friendly, Paradise Island Park & Beach Resort is a solid choice, offering fun activities like snorkeling, diving, and kayaking.
Pearl Farm and Discovery Samal may be on the premium side, but I still recommend them because they’re among the most beautiful and well-known resorts on the island, offering affordable day-tour packages, modern facilities, clear water, calm views, and the iconic Parola Tower.
Getting around is easy with motorcycles and tricycles offering low-cost rides. Don’t skip the Monfort Bat Sanctuary, where you can see millions of fruit bats up close.
3. Dahican Beach, Mati City
Dahican Beach is one of my go-to spots since I live just 30 minutes away, and every visit ends with me staying longer than planned. The white sand, big waves and friendly surf community make it the perfect place to chill.
Entrance fees are affordable, and there are plenty of budget-friendly places to stay, you can even rent a tent along the beach. Food is also cheap, with fresh seafood and simple meals everywhere.
Dahican gives you genuine surf energy without the high cost.
4. Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental
From Davao City, the trip to Governor Generoso takes around 4-5 hours, and it’s one of those drives where the scenery gets better the closer you get to the coast.
When you arrive, you’re greeted with quiet beaches, clear water and plenty of affordable resorts, making it a great spot for a relaxing, budget-friendly escape.
Two of our favorite places here are Jakka Beach and Lanka Beach Resort. We’ve celebrated birthdays here so many times because they offer budget-friendly cottages and rooms that can fit up to 20 people, perfect for families or big groups.
The vibe is always calm and simple, with clean shores and super chill surroundings.
The food here is also very affordable, especially with the nearby fish port where you can buy fresh-catch tuna at a cheap price. It’s one of the reasons we love coming back, good beaches, friendly people and fresh food without the high cost.
5. Lake Sebu
Lake Sebu blends peaceful lake views with the rich traditions of the T’boli people, and when I visited years ago, the long travel from Davao City was completely worth it.
We had lunch in a floating cottage, eating fresh tilapia while looking out at the calm lake. I loved seeing the T’nalak weaving and brasswork up close.
If you’re looking for a nice place to stay, Sunrise Garden Lake Resort is a good pick with its lakeside views and affordable rooms.
With its cool mountain air and relaxed pace, it’s a place where you learn, unwind and appreciate culture without spending much.
6. Baganga
I included Baganga on my list because Baganga is always in my heart. One of my favorite places is Langoyon Beach Resort, a calm and family-friendly spot with soft white sand, clear water and affordable accommodation.
The food is budget-friendly, and the whole vibe is relaxed and homey. There are many resorts lined along the coast, so it’s easy to find something within your budget.
San Victor Island offers clear water and affordable entrance fees, while Curtain Falls gives you a refreshing swim surrounded by nature.
7. Aliwagwag Falls
Aliwagwag Falls in Cateel impressed me the moment I arrived. Its more than 80+ cascading tiers look like a massive water staircase, so amazing and breathtaking!!
The water is super clear and icy, making it perfect on a hot day. Entrance fees stay easy on the wallet, and you can grab great photos from the roadside bridge for free, just stay alert since it’s right by the highway.
There are safe lagoon-like swim spots you can enjoy without extra fees, and even if some activities were closed when we visited, the place is still worth the trip.
8. Enchanted River – Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
Enchanted River is famous for its deep sapphire-blue water, and when I finally saw it in person, I was completely speechless. The main area is so deep and vividly blue that it almost doesn’t look real.
Getting here from Davao is a long ride, but it’s worth it because you’ll pass beautiful spots along the way.
Entrance fees stay affordable, and renting life vests or cottages is also budget-friendly. With banca rides, fish feeding and the peaceful surroundings, it remains one of Mindanao’s most unforgettable nature spots.
9. Asik-Asik Falls – North Cotabato
Asik-Asik Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in the Philippines, known for its wide curtain of water flowing straight from lush green cliffs with no visible river source.
The entire scene feels like something out of a fantasy world. It’s also very budget-friendly, with only a small environmental fee depending on local guidelines.
The trail going down takes effort, but once you see the falls up close, it’s absolutely worth it. If you love untouched nature and dramatic scenery, Asik-Asik is a must-see.

10. Tinuy-an Falls – Bislig, Surigao del Sur
Tinuy-an Falls, often called the “Niagara Falls of the Philippines”, is one of those places that instantly impresses you. The massive curtain-like waters look powerful and calming, especially when you catch the rainbow mist early in the morning.
Entrance fees remain budget-friendly, and the raft rides are affordable if you want a closer view under the falls. The surrounding area is peaceful and perfect for families or travelers who want a relaxing nature escape.
