I visited Alona Beach during the summer of 2024 for two nights, and let me tell you, it felt like a fiesta was happening—even on an ordinary day!

This small but beautiful beach stretches for about 1.5 kilometers which is an ideal spot if you want to enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing by the water.
What makes it special is its overall vibe, especially its vibrant nightlife, where there are plenty of things to do, whether during the day or at night.
Additionally, Alona Beach serves as a gateway to nearby islands and dive sites, including Balicasag Island, Pamilacan Island, and Virgin Island (temporarily closed for rehabilitation).
You can find tour operators along the beach that offer island-hopping tours, dolphin-watching trips, and scuba diving adventures.
The combination of natural beauty and exciting activities has cemented Alona Beach’s reputation as a must-visit destination in the Philippines.
Where is Alona Beach Located?
Alona Beach is located on Panglao Island, which is part of the province of Bohol. Panglao Island is connected to Bohol’s mainland by two bridges, making it easy to reach.
The island is in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, and Alona Beach sits on its southwestern coast.
Panglao Island itself is small but offers a mix of stunning beaches, resorts, and natural attractions. Alona Beach is the most developed area on the island, with a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and bars along its shoreline.
How Far is Alona Beach from the Airport?
Alona Beach is conveniently located near Bohol-Panglao International Airport. The distance between the airport and the beach is about 3 kilometers or a 10-minute drive.
This makes it incredibly easy for you to reach Alona Beach shortly after arriving in Bohol.
You can take a taxi, a tricycle, a tuk-tuk, or arrange a private transfer from the airport to your resort and vice versa. Many beachfront resorts in Panglao Island offer airport pickup services for added convenience.
I availed this one time at the resort I stayed when I needed to go to Tagbilaran Pier and it cost me 400 pesos.

There’s plenty to do at Alona Beach, whether you’re visiting during the day or night or if you’re looking for adventure or relaxation. Here are some activities in Alona and beyond you can consider:
🤿 Snorkeling and Diving
Alona Beach is a favorite among divers because of its proximity to top-notch dive sites. Balicasag Island, in particular, is famous for its vibrant marine life and stunning underwater cliffs.
If you’re not a certified diver, snorkeling is a great way to explore the area’s coral reefs.
I haven’t tried swimming at Alona Beach or diving at Balicasag Island yet, but that’s definitely something I’d love to experience when I return.
⛵ Island-Hopping Tours
Book an island-hopping tour to explore nearby spots like Balicasag Island, and Pamilacan Island. Virgin Island is currently closed for rehabilitation after a tourist vandalized a coral reef, which is strictly prohibited.
These tours often include dolphin-watching and stops at sandbars and snorkeling areas. You can easily avail of this at your resort or a booking site like Klook.
⚠️ Important Update: As of June 2025, water activities around Pamilacan Island—such as snorkeling and dolphin watching—are temporarily suspended due to a recent incident. Please check with local tour operators for the latest updates before your trip.

If you’d rather take it slow, Alona Beach is perfect for lounging by the shore. Several beachfront resorts in Panglao Island offer sunbeds and beach chairs where you can enjoy the view.
Even if you’re not staying at one of the beachfront resorts, you can still visit by dining at their restaurant or checking if they offer a day pass.
🍸 Dining and Nightlife
The beachfront comes alive at night with open-air restaurants and bars. You can enjoy fresh seafood, sip on tropical cocktails, or listen to live music as the sun sets.
If you visit late at night, you might be lucky enough to catch a fire dance show along the shore or other performances by talented locals.
⛰️ Explore Beyond the Beach
Take a break from the shore and explore other attractions on Panglao Island. Just a short drive away, Hinagdanan Cave features an underground pool worth visiting.
If snorkeling or diving with a school of sardines sounds exciting, head to Napaling Reef early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
These two spots are close to each other, so you can easily visit both in one trip. You can also explore the rest of Bohol, including the famous Chocolate Hills and the Loboc River.

The best time to visit Alona Beach and Bohol is during the dry season, which runs from November to May – or if I’m being specific, March to May.
These months offer sunny weather and calm seas, perfect for your beach activities and island tours.
Keep in mind that the dry season in the Philippines is also jellyfish season, so take extra precautions during water activities. Trust me—I learned the hard way.
Avoid visiting during the rainy season, from June to October, as heavy rains and rough seas can affect your plans.
However, if you don’t mind occasional rain showers, you may find fewer crowds and lower accommodation rates during this time.
How Do You Get Around Alona Beach?
Getting around Alona Beach and Panglao Island is relatively easy. Here are some options:
🚶🏻♀️ Walking
Alona Beach is small enough to explore on foot. This is the best option for touring the area, as traffic can get heavy, and parking spots are often hard to find due to the crowds.
🛺 Tricycles or Tuk-tuk
These are the most common modes of transport on the island. They’re affordable and easy to find, but make sure to agree on the fare with the driver before hopping in.
🛵 Motorbike Rentals
Renting a motorbike is a fun way to explore Panglao Island at your own pace. We rented one from our accommodation for 350 pesos. Don’t forget to wear a helmet, bring your valid driver’s license, and follow local traffic rules.
🚗 Car Rentals
If you’re traveling with a group or carrying a lot of luggage, renting a car can be a convenient choice. It’s also ideal if you prefer to stay out of the sun when going from point A to point B.

Alona Pawikan is a budget-friendly resort just a short walk from Alona Beach. Despite its affordable rates, the resort offers clean rooms, friendly staff, and a cozy atmosphere.
During our stay, the staff were especially helpful, ensuring I got to the ferry port on time. You can also rent a motorbike for Php 350.00 a day, which is a great way to explore the island.

💸 Bring Cash: While some establishments accept credit cards, many smaller shops and restaurants only take cash.
🚌 Book Tours in Advance: Popular activities like island-hopping and diving can fill up quickly, so it’s best to book early.
