Bohol Island, Philippines is the last province I visited in the Central Visayas Region. I’ve been to Cebu, Siquijor, and Dumaguete (my hometown, of course) many times.

Spending my first-ever trip to Bohol last summer only makes me want to go back for more!

First, let me introduce this jewel. Bohol is a haven for nature lovers, history buffs, and beach bums alike.

If you’ve heard of the Philippine tarsiers or the awe-inspiring Chocolate Hills, then Bohol has likely crossed your radar before. 😉

Now, if you’re planning to visit this island and still don’t have any idea about the right itinerary to follow, then you’re in the right place!

This guide will help you craft the perfect Bohol itinerary, whether you have a quick 3-day stopover or a leisurely 5-day adventure.

We’ll dig in into the must-see sights, hidden gems, and optional activities to create an itinerary that caters to your interests.

How Many Days Are Enough for a Bohol Itinerary?

The ideal length of your Bohol trip depends on your travel style and interests. I spent 5 days in Bohol on my last trip, having planned activities in advance.

To maximize my time and tailor my experience, I booked a customized two-day Bohol tour package through a local tour operator (Joshua Bohol Travel & Tour).

I also contacted a dive shop to arrange specific activities I wanted to do on the island. (Bohol Freediving Gears)

If 5 days feels like too much time, 3 days is a good option to cover the essential Bohol tourist spots like the Chocolate Hills and a glimpse of Panglao Island.

For a more relaxed pace with additional activities like island hopping, adventure sports, or exploring beyond the nearby tourist spots, you should consider 5 days to a week.

Days 1 – 3 of Your Bohol Itinerary

📌 Day 1: Arrival and Bohol Countryside Tour

🤝🏼 Blood Compact Shrine

Step back in time at the Blood Compact Shrine in Tagbilaran City. This monument commemorates a pivotal 1565 blood oath ceremony between Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and local chieftain Datu Sikatuna, symbolizing peace and cultural exchange.

While the exact location of the blood compact is debated, the shrine’s impressive statue offers a powerful reminder of this historic encounter.

Don’t forget to snap a photo with the “I Love Tagbilaran” sign at the entrance. 📸

🐒 Philippine Tarsier

Next on your itinerary is seeing the Philippine Tarsier – the world’s smallest primate!

Observe these shy, nocturnal creatures responsibly. Keep your voice down, avoid flash photography, and move slowly to minimize stress.

While some sanctuaries may not be perfect, be an advocate for responsible tourism and their well-being.

⛵ Loboc River Cruise

For a relaxing Bohol lunch experience, consider a Loboc River cruise.

Cruise down the scenic Loboc River on a floating restaurant while you enjoy a delicious Filipino buffet lunch with fresh fish, chicken barbecue, and more.

Take in the beautiful landscapes – rolling hills, palm trees, and colorful riverside villages. This must-do activity is a great way to experience the laid-back charm of the Bohol countryside.

🌳 Bilar Manmade Forest

Add the Bilar Man-Made Forest to your Bohol itinerary for a unique experience!

Walk or drive through this scenic mahogany grove planted in the 1940s as part of a reforestation project.

Towering trees create a cool, leafy canopy overhead, perfect for a refreshing break and capturing photos (be cautious of passing vehicles).

⛰️ The Chocolate Hills

Next to your Bohol itinerary is the Chocolate Hills, a UNESCO site featuring over 1,200 unique cone-shaped hills.

During the dry season (March-May), the grassy hills turn a chocolate-brown color, resembling Hershey’s Kisses.

These ancient uplifted coral reefs, weathered over millions of years, are a geological marvel not to be missed.

Just be prepared to climb stairs for panoramic views. 🫣

⛪ Baclayon Church

Wrap up the first day of your Bohol itinerary with a visit to Baclayon Church.

This National Cultural Treasure, built in 1727, is the oldest stone church in Bohol.

Admire its grand facade crafted from intricate coral stonework, a testament to Spanish colonial architecture in the Philippines.

There are fewer tourists when you visit late in the afternoon.

📌 Day 2: Panglao Island Tour

🪸 Snorkel at Napaling Reef

Avoid the crowd and start your day early by snorkeling or diving at Napaling Reef.

Include this in your Bohol itinerary for a chance to explore a marine protected area with colorful fish, vibrant coral formations, and sardines run!

The crystal-clear waters here offer excellent visibility for divers and snorkelers to encounter diverse marine life, from tiny neon damselfish to giant brains and regal angelfish.

🪨 Hinagdanan Cave

Just a few minutes away from Napaling, you might want to add Hinagdanan Cave to your Bohol itinerary.

Descend a carved stairway into this fascinating limestone cave adorned with unique stalactites and stalagmites. You can also take a dip in the cool, clear pool at the bottom.

The cave can be dark in some areas, so bring a flashlight for a more complete exploration. Aim for an early visit to avoid crowds.

🍃 The Mist

For a delicious brunch or early lunch, visit The Mist – one of Panglao Island’s most aesthetically pleasing restaurants.

The restaurant has a beautiful structure built with native materials like bamboo and coconut, complemented by abundant plant life that creates a calming ambiance for diners.

More than just a pretty face, The Mist offers innovative dishes with stunning presentations. While it may be on the pricier side, the experience is truly worth it.

⛱️ Alona Beach

Add Alona Beach to your Bohol itinerary for a relaxing beach experience. Indulge in the soft, pristine white sand and cool off with a dip in the clear waters.

The lively beachfront offers a variety of restaurants, and shops to where you can explore.

For those seeking a vibrant nightlife scene, Alona Beach also has a variety of bars and clubs with live music and dancing.

⛪ St. Augustine Parish Church

Also known as Panglao Church, visit St. Augustine Parish Church for a glimpse into Panglao Island’s rich history and culture.

This church, constructed in the late 18th century, is the oldest church on the island and has been declared an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines.

🌅 Sunset at Doljo Beach

End your day with a breathtaking sunset view at Doljo Beach.

This secluded haven on the West Coast has peaceful vibes and breathtaking coastal vistas as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant colors.

You can relax on the beach or grab a drink at a beachfront restaurant (like a day pass at North Zen) for a truly magical experience.

Just aim for an arrival before 4 pm to secure a prime spot for the golden hour and sunset.

✨ Jagna Calamay Delicacy

And now we’re going to the less-touristy spots in Bohol and our first stop is to sample Jagna’s Calamay Delicacy, one of the best foods to try in Bohol.

“Calamay” is a sticky rice dessert with various flavors, in the town of Jagna (but you can buy one at other souvenir shops as well).

There are lots of stalls along the street selling this, but our tour guide led us to Ching’s Calamay.

It costs from 60 to 75 pesos and you can choose from the ube (purple yam) flavor or the original with or without peanuts.

🌾 Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

For a glimpse into the island’s agricultural heritage, add this tourist spot to your Bohol itinerary.

Marvel at the verdant rice paddies cascading down the hillsides, a testament to generations of local farmers’ ingenuity.

You can wander through the intricate network of paddies, spot farmers tending their crops (but depending on the season), and soak in the peaceful scenery.

Walk amidst the paddies on small paths and reach the viewpoint (Eleuterio’s Restaurant where you can also have lunch) for breathtaking panoramic vistas.

🏞 Can-Umantod Falls

Just a few minutes away from the rice terraces, hike through a path going to the cascading waterfalls of Can-Umantod Falls.

While here, you can take a cool dip, climb the rocks behind the falls for a unique perspective (be cautious though!), and soak in the beauty.

Local guides are also available for a more enriching experience and you can just tip them to express your gratitude.

💦 Cabagnow Pool Cave

For a unique swimming adventure in Anda, Bohol, head to Cabagnow Pool Cave. This natural limestone cavern hides a crystal-clear pool.

Just be prepared for a hot and undeveloped path to reach the cave entrance (I got sunburnt here).

You can descend by ladder or jump in, and cool off in the refreshing water bathed in sunlight filtering through the high ceiling.

Remember, this spot can get crowded during peak season (in proportion to its small area).

🏖️ Anda Quinale Beach

Escape the crowds and unwind on Anda Quinale Beach, Bohol’s east coast gem and probably my favorite beach in Bohol.

This pristine white sand beach boasts clear waters and a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for swimming and relaxation.

Unlike Panglao’s bustling shores, Anda offers a serene escape where you can truly unwind and where you can also see a glimpse of Camiguin Island (the island with more volcanoes than town!).

📌 Day 4: Island Hopping or Adventure Park

🏝️ Option 1: Balicasag Island and Virgin Island

Indulge in an unforgettable island-hopping adventure to Balicasag Island and Virgin Island.

Renowned for their world-class diving and snorkeling spots, these islands offer a glimpse into a thriving underwater paradise.

You can witness dazzling coral reefs with colorful fish and diverse marine life. Keep your eyes peeled – you might even encounter playful dolphins on your journey!

🚡 Option 2: Danao Adventure Park

For thrill-seekers, Danao Adventure Park is your Bohol playground.

This eco-adventure park offers a variety of activities, including zip lines that soar through the jungle canopy, a giant swing that takes you over a scenic valley, and exciting off-road buggy rides that you can add to your Bohol itinerary.

📌 Day 5: Optional Activities and Departure

🏛️ Tagbilaran National Museum

On the final day of your Bohol itinerary, start your day with a free and fascinating immersion into the island’s history and culture at the Tagbilaran National Museum.

This free historical gem housed in a colonial building showcases artifacts, traditional crafts, and exhibits detailing the fascinating story of the Boholano people, the Spanish influence, and the island’s unique wildlife.

Don’t miss the chance to learn about Asin Tibuok, one of the world’s most expensive salts!

By the way, National Museums are closed on Mondays! 🙂

🛍️ Souvenir Shopping

Stock up on unique souvenirs and local treasures at shops throughout Tagbilaran City or Panglao Island.

Discover handcrafted Bohol hats and bags, playful fridge magnets and keychains, or indulge in delectable treats like peanut kisses and calamay.

For a truly unique find, consider the world’s most expensive salt, Asin Tibuok, priced around 600 pesos.

How to Get to Bohol?

✈️ By Airplane

For a swift and convenient arrival, consider flying into Bohol-Panglao International Airport (PGL) on Panglao Island.

This is the main gateway to Bohol, receiving daily flights from major Philippine cities like Manila, Pampanga, and Davao.

Flights typically take between 1 and 1.5 hours, making it the ideal choice for travelers seeking a speedy start to their Bohol adventure.

Remember to book your flights in advance, especially during peak season, to secure the best fares.

⛴️ By Ferry

If you have more time and are looking for a budget-friendly option, traveling to Bohol by ferry is a viable alternative.

Several ferry terminals across Bohol, including Tagbilaran City (Panglao Island), Carmen, and Jagna, receive daily services from Cebu City, Siquijor Island, and other nearby islands.

Numerous ferry companies operate on these routes, with popular options being Oceanjet, SuperCat, Lite Ferries, and Montenegro Shipping Lines.

Travel time varies depending on the route and ferry type. Expect a journey of 1.5 to 2 hours on a fast ferry from Cebu City, while slower and more affordable ferries can take up to 4 hours.

While ferries offer a more cost-effective way to reach Bohol, be prepared for a longer travel time compared to flying.

Research ferry schedules and book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season.

This is a clean and comfortable hotel in a central location, perfect for exploring Tagbilaran City. It won’t have resort amenities, but it’s a great budget-friendly option.

Alona Pawikan

This is an affordable option near the popular Alona Beach.  While close to the beach, it might not be directly on the beachfront and may have fewer amenities.

🛏️ Mid-Range Stay

Sweet Home Boutique Hotel

This charming boutique hotel offers comfortable rooms in Tagbilaran City. It might have a more personalized feel than a larger hotel.

Pyramid Beach Resort

This mid-range beachfront resort offers stunning views and amenities on Alona Beach.  It provides a good balance between affordability and resort experience.
