Our Visit to Wawa Dam
The Wawa Dam in Rodriguez (formerly known as Montalban), Rizal was built in 1904 and opened in 1909.
This dam, with a maximum depth of 13 meters and a length of 83 meters, once supplied water to Manila.
However, it has been abandoned since the construction of the Angat Dam in the 1960s and now stands as a historical landmark.
Our family trip to Wawa Dam was nothing short of a sweet escape.
It’s super affordable to get in, and the drive is pretty easy, which makes it perfect for a family day out.
As you hike toward the dam, you’ll pass by local houses along the trail, where nearly every household sells fresh fruits, snacks, and souvenirs.
The trail itself has a few challenging spots, but it’s still manageable even if you’re with kids.
You might also notice some litter and graffiti on the caves and rocks, which can feel out of place in such a naturally beautiful area.
There’s a small entrance fee of ₱20 per adult, while kids get in free.
When we finally reached the dam, the overall view was just amazing. It is surrounded by cliffs and with the river flowing, it’s like a hidden paradise so close to the city.

Activities to Enjoy at Wawa Dam
Wawa Dam is a favorite spot for outdoor activities such as hiking.
You can start with a scenic hike along the trails to the dam, surrounded by unique rock formations that add to the area’s rugged beauty.
To cool off, you can take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Wawa River—it’s a perfect way to beat the heat, especially if you go there in midday.
If you’re after a more relaxed time, set up a picnic by the river and enjoy the peaceful views and natural surroundings.
As you reach the end of the trail, you’ll spot boats lined up along the shore. Locals often invite you for a ride to the other side of the dam.
If you’re in a group, you can either wait for the boat to fill with other passengers or rent it out privately.
Renting the whole boat can cost around ₱350, which might feel pricey.

How to Get to Wawa Dam?
Wawa Dam is located in Rodriguez, Rizal, and is just an hour away from Metro Manila, but for us, it’s a quick 40-minute drive.
For those coming from other parts of Metro Manila, the most common way to reach Wawa Dam is by taking a bus or jeepney from Cubao or Marikina to Montalban, followed by a tricycle ride to the dam itself.
If you prefer to drive, you can take Commonwealth Avenue and head towards Rodriguez via Marcos Highway.
There are parking areas near the entrance, but we’ve learned from experience that it’s best to arrive early to beat the crowds.

Best Time to Visit Wawa Dam
The best time to visit Wawa Dam is during the dry season, from November to May when the weather is ideal for hiking and swimming.
If you visit during the rainy season (June to October), keep in mind that rising water levels can make trails slippery and less safe.
Aim to get there early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and enjoy cooler temperatures.
Going there at sunrise and sunset will offer amazing views of the Wawa Dam and surrounding mountains which is perfect if you love photography.
What to Bring on Your Wawa Dam Adventure
🥤 Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized, especially if you plan to hike or swim. The stores along the trail sell refreshments, but prices can be quite high, so it’s best to bring your own.
👟 Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes suitable for hiking on uneven terrain. We went there unplanned and were only wearing slippers, which made the hike quite challenging—especially with the little ones in tow! So, make sure to wear proper hiking footwear for a safer and more comfortable journey.
👒 Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are also must-haves to protect yourself from the sun. Don’t forget to pack a camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful scenery, a portable first-aid kit for any minor injuries, and extra clothes if you plan to take a dip in the river.
